Meet our September Resident of the Month!
We’re excited to announce the Resident of the Month: Mr. Valis W.!Mr. Valis was born on the island of Antigua and describes the island as being a paradise made of sun, sea, and sand.
At age 10, Valis started helping his mother and grandmother cook meals for the construction workers at local job sites, and by age 25 he was cooking at the Jabberwock Beach Club on Antigua. From there, he worked on St. Martin and then St. Croix before arriving in Philadelphia in 1995. Valis met his wife, Pearline, at the Southwest Adventist Church and they have been married for 15 years.
Valis never stopped cooking and worked for the catering company that provided the meals for then Councilman John Street’s retirement party before his successful run for the Mayor’s office in 1999. He has also worked for the Academy of Music and the Kimmel Center. If you have any questions about food or the islands, Valis will be happy to answer them!
